It looks like it may be decades before they can create the same coverage for those living in rural areas for those closer to the city.
"There is going to have to be an acceptance that broadband will be faster in the cities. The model of equal access will have to be adapted," said Ian Fogg, an analyst with Jupiter Research. He added: "Fibre costs such a fortune to roll out that it may take decades to get to ubiquitous coverage in rural areas."
Next year looks set to have the introduction of "ADSL2+", which promises speeds of upto 24mb, but like ADSL, it will be dependant on how close to the exchange you live.

I live in the west Slough area which has fibre coverage by Virgin Media, however the best internet connection you can get on this infrastructure is a dial up modem. I happen to be one of the lucky ones as I am able to use BT from the Burnham exchange. There is a hugh area of several thousand homes which are on the Slough exchange and guess what, they are too far away for ADSL so no broadband at all. There is demand for digital services, you only need to look at the number of Sky installations to see that, so lets see some investment in existing fibre networks by upgrading the end points and I for one would love to move to a 20 or 50Gb connection.
